Later, after attending college and getting a job as the radio and TV announcer for a major
college football and basketball program, I had an epiphany. I was casually talking with the
head football coach one day after practice, and I asked him who he thought was going to win
the Michigan-Ohio State game, knowing that he was a “voter” in the coaches’ poll and that
both teams were ranked.

The coach leaned in and told me, “Garrett, you’re not going to believe this, but I never
actually vote in the poll. I let my sports information director fill out the ballot for me.

“You see,” the coach continued, “I am so busy coaching my team and worrying about our
upcoming opponents, that I don’t have time to follow what a hundred other teams are doing,
or worry about who beats who.”

Thanks, Coach! Sure, his insight didn’t help me figure out who was going to win (Michigan
did …this was during the John Cooper era at Ohio State) … but the more I thought about it,
the more I realized that the coach had stumbled upon a way to rate teams that was more
efficient than anything I could have dreamed up.

My brain started working over this information in my mind…a coach who is supposed to be a
voter in the coaches’ poll only has information about his team and the teams he has played.
Hmmmm…what if, instead of using a selected pool of voters who subjectively put together a
listing of what they consider to be the Top 25 teams, what if every team voted in the poll?
And each team assigned a ranking only to itself and to the teams it had played? Wouldn’t
that be a more objective way of determining who the top teams are?

“The Formula” that powers the Sports Power
Rankings
was developed by a former radio and
television sports announcer whose father was a
professional statistician.

I started trying to predict the outcomes of upcoming
games when I was about 12 years old, in the early
1980s, using the “PF” and “PA” totals from the NFL
standings on the agate page of my local sports section.
My formula, tweaked with some input from my father,
enabled me to win the football pool run by my buddies
four straight years in high school.
